NYC Halloween safety

Halloween is an exciting time of the year! It’s a holiday filled with spooky stories, delicious treats, haunted houses, and thousands of trick or treaters. However, with all the extra activities, cars on the road, and people visiting your property, safety hazards can result in serious injuries. It’s important to take the necessary precautions to stay safe this holiday season. Here are some tips for staying safe this Halloween.

Stand Out:

Residential areas may be darker at night which could make it harder for a driver to see you on the road. Carrying a flashlight will make you more visible as well as illuminating your walking path. Flashlights can also help prevent slip and fall accidents. Glow sticks and reflector tape should be added to your costume or treat bag to maximize your visibility.

Costumes:

To limit the possibility of a slip and fall injury make sure your child’s costume fits in length so they do not trip over anything. If they have a mask make sure it is removed until they reach their trick or treat destination. Often a mask can obstruct your view which could put you in potential danger.

Homeowners:

If you decorate your home make sure there are no visible wires that anyone could trip over. Also, make sure to keep your walkway clear to avoid any injuries. If you are aware of a hazard on your property that might not be obvious to everyone else and they are injured, you could be liable.

Don’t Drink and Drive:

If you decide to drink on Halloween night, make sure you have a sober driver to take you home. Drinking and driving could result in serious injuries and/or death, as well as heavy fines and possible civil lawsuits. Twice as many children pedestrians are killed on Halloween night than on any other night of the year. Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t risk it!
